Today was a day I think I’ll never forget. I say I think because many days at Ability Beyond feel like this. Can every day be unforgettable? Perhaps. They aren’t flashy or grand — but they’re full of something deeper: presence, connection, love. From the moment I walk in, something inside me opens.
This morning, a trip to the music center at church brought out something beautiful. As karaoke-style singing was being done, I watched people pour out their hearts with courage and joy. There was no self-consciousness, just pure expression. It was humbling.
In the afternoon, we returned for arts and crafts, watched music videos, and danced. Mikey followed me around most of the time. He doesn’t speak in a way I can understand — yet. But mostly, all he wanted to do was hug. These tight, full-body hugs, like his soul needed to connect. And I let it happen. Again and again. His love blew my heart wide open.
Another asked for assistance with toileting. Later, he kept approaching just to say thank you, in his form. Over and over, this went on. That moment reminds me of the most human thing we can offer, dignity and compassion. Even the act of cleaning a bowel movement becomes an offering when it’s done with care — and clearly, he felt that. He knew he was seen. He knew he was respected. We know the love that was shared.
From helping with feeding at lunch to simply being present, today was a quiet kind of miracle. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be — not just working shifts, but showing up as a loving, concerned person for people who deserve that every day.
Being nobody special, just loving everybody loving everybody; an ocean of sacred energy. I get to live that at Ability Beyond. I get to be grateful for experiencing a day like today — every day. And perhaps, that’s what makes each day unforgettable.
